This year, our Spellbound Summer theme explores the Slavic folklore of Baba Yaga, often depicted as a cruel repulsive old hag or kindly crone. She is a shape-shifter that lives in isolation and controls the woods of her domain. She is both malevolent and generous, ambivalent and resolute.
We choose to celebrate the Baba Yaga as an inclusive, multi-faceted tale of feminine wisdom and strength, honoring the generations of women, seen and unseen, recognized and unrecognized, that teach and guide us to blaze our own paths and create our own space.
We join the Maiden, on their short but dangerous journey as they follow sun dappled larkspurs along beaten paths and unexplored terrain under darkly dancing shadows; amongst the serviceberry, the stream violets and trailing mosses until finally they fall under the eyes of the house of Baba Yaga, perched high and spindly. Is she a menacing threat? Is she a helpful guide? Perhaps she is all in one.
