I love this book of micro-essays! Each essay briefly details the history of a given color and creates tangible context for prevailing cultural associations. It’s super fun, easy to read, and I think it holds special value for people like knitters, interior designers, and painters who deal intimately with color in their everyday lives.
Rejection
Many authors have tried and failed to capture the existential perils of a hyper-online existence, but Thulathimutte handles the subject with a necessary brutality. Read Thulathimutte’s irresistible story The Feminist; if you like it, buy the book, and then buy it for all your friends so you can talk about it with them.
Penguin Book of Japanese Short Stories
I used to work at a bookstore where their massive fiction section was organized by the author's country of origin - I found this prohibitive at first, but I came to love it, and also found I had a personal affinity for Japanese literature and its strategic and masterful simplicity. Multiauthor story collections make great gifts, and with an adorable cover and perfectly wrappable size, it just can’t be beat.
